The Great Spotted Woodpecker (Dendrocopos major) is a striking bird, easily identified by its black-and-white plumage and bold red patch on the underside. Measuring around 23-26 cm, it is known for its drumming sound, which it uses to communicate, establish territory, and search for insects beneath tree bark.
A skilled forager, the Great Spotted Woodpecker uses its strong beak to drum on trees and excavate deep into wood, extracting beetles, ants, and larvae. Its stiff tail feathers provide support as it clings to tree trunks, allowing it to navigate vertical surfaces with ease.
One interesting behavior is its method of storing food. When a food source is plentiful, it may stash some in crevices or tree holes to eat later, showcasing the woodpecker’s cleverness and adaptability in the wild. This iconic bird's vibrant plumage and rhythmic drumming make it a true symbol of the forest.
